My Black queer femme flag 🤎
As y’all know, last night I made a flag that better describes myself because there wasn’t really a flag i connected with. I’d only ever felt comfortable using the progress pride flag, but sometimes I had FOMO for not having a flag that represents me. All the Black femme flags I found online were specifically called “Black femme lesbian flags” so I didn’t feel comfortable using those because I don’t identify as a lesbian (even though I primarily pursue women, queer just fits me like a glove) AND honestly I wasn’t connected with the colors. So I thought you know what, I’m gonna make a Black queer femme flag for myself and maybe others will connect with it too!
Who can use it: my goal for this flag is to have it represent ALL Black femmes. I want it to be clear that this is meant to be inclusive for ANY Black person who identifies as femme. I don’t gatekeep gender and sexuality with the femme identity, and I’m not about to do that with this flag because I don’t like the way non-Black femmes (I mean it’s mostly white femmes who do this..) try to police what femme is or isn’t and try to control how everybody should view or navigate their femme identity?? I see posts about that & I’m always like huh?? Like not everybody gonna agree or relate to wtf you’re talking about?? Like man, so many of us have complex identities and that’s for us to understand, and for me, I don’t view my femme identity separate from my Blackness. Like “Black femme” is a package deal babe. So I’m here to be a fresh perspective to say that everybody is gonna have a different relationship with being femme because of their intersections with race, socializations, environment, background, culture, etc. Like if you’re Black and you call yourself femme and you connect with this fuckin flag then fuck yeah, go for it!
~ Meanings ~
First stripe: Black joy
Second stripe: Culture
Third stripe: Heritage
Fourth stripe: Resilience
Fifth stripe: Femininity
Sixth stripe: Freedom
Seventh stripe: Intersectionality
I’m very proud of this and honestly it would be cool if other Black queer femmes used my flag too and even reposted it along with a selfie, tagging me to say I’m the creator but there’s soooo many flags LOL no pressure at all 😂 but hey, I’d really appreciate if allies and other femmes on tumblr shared this with their mutuals, like I said I don’t expect it to take off or anything but it would mean a lot to me for visibility & representation purposes 🤎🫶🏽
